Skin Cancer Screenings

Skin cancer screenings are essential medical visits aimed at identifying skin cancer as early as possible.

What is it?

Skin cancer can be deadly if not caught early.  At Metrolina Dermatology and Skin Surgery Specialists, we are experts in skin cancer detection and treatment. Comprehensive full-body skin exams conducted by board-certified dermatologists play a huge role in maintaining skin health and can even be lifesaving.

What to expect

Skin cancer screening is a visual inspection of your skin by a medical professional. Your dermatologist will evaluate your skin for lesions or suspicious growths, as well as check for growths or rashes that could indicate an internal disease. Sometimes, a dermatoscope, a specialized hand-held magnifying glass, is used. Skin cancer screenings typically take 10 minutes but may take longer if there is any area of concern or a history of melanoma.

If a suspicious lesion is found, it can be treated in a variety of ways. First, the doctor may choose to simply monitor the lesion over time. Often, a biopsy is taken during your appointment and sent to an outside pathology lab for evaluation. Lab results are generally received in 7-14 days, at which point you will be contacted with the results. If skin cancer is detected, the physician will have you return for treatment or removal of the lesion.

Contact Metrolina Dermatology and Skin Surgery Specialists today, your South Charlotte dermatologist, to schedule a consultation and learn more about skin cancer screenings and the importance of skin cancer prevention.
