Eczema is a red rash or red patches of the skin that is commonly found inside the folds of elbows, knees, hands, feet and cheeks. It develops due to a weakened skin barrier and can be very uncomfortable.
Eczema affects both children and adults, and is frequently identified
by its appearance: dry, flaky, inflamed or scaly skin, blisters, bumps, and in
some instances patches of deep cracks that may be painful.
Eczema is often associated with atopic dermatitis; however, eczema
encompasses a broader range of skin conditions. Atopic dermatitis is the most
prevalent form of eczema and can impact virtually any part of the skin.
Many with eczema experience flare-ups of the
condition which are then contrasted by periods of remission where no signs or
symptoms appear. Remission can vary in length of time but oftentimes can last
weeks, months or even years. While eczema is not contagious, it can be very
uncomfortable so it’s important to find a treatment plan that works for you and
your skin.
