Dandruff

A common scalp condition characterized by shedding dead skin cells from the scalp, often accompanied by itching and flaking.

What is it?

Dandruff is a common skin condition that mainly impacts the scalp but can occur wherever there are oil glands. Dandruff usually appears as small, white flakes and are often reported alongside an itchy scalp.

While dandruff is usually seen in adults, it may be the result of a yeast-like fungus known as Malassezia, which can affect all age groups. Neither dandruff nor Malassezia are contagious.

How is it treated?

The expertly trained and board-certified dermatologists at Metrolina Dermatology will perform a scalp evaluation to identify the cause of the dandruff.

Depending on the cause and intensity, medicated shampoos, creams, or lotions may be recommended. For persistent cases, a prescription-strength shampoo or steroid lotions may be prescribed.

Your provider may also offer guidance on appropriate hair care and lifestyle changes to help alleviate this condition. With regular follow-up appointments, your dermatologist will monitor your progress and alter treatment as required for optimal management of the condition.
