Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are the second most common type of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma originates in the squamous cells that form the middle and outer layers of the skin. This common form of skin cancer is usually not fatal. However, if left untreated, it could grow significantly in size and shape, potentially spreading to other body parts if it penetrates too deep into the skin. This growth can damage nerves, blood vessels and anything else in its path.
The primary cause of squamous cell carcinoma is excessive exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun, tanning beds, or lamps. The cancer often presents as a solid bump, known as a “nodule”, on the skin. Symptoms can vary widely, but common signs include a rough, red, or scaly patch, a persistent open sore, a wart-like growth, or a sore appearing on an old scar.
If you notice a bump that doesn't heal within two months or a nodule that refuses to disappear, it is highly recommended you seek a professional opinion from a dermatologist. Our Charlotte, North Carolina board-certified dermatologists are expertly trained in effective treatment and will work to eradicate the presence of squamous cell carcinoma from your skin.
The providers
at Metrolina Dermatology will examine the problem area to assess whether
squamous cell carcinoma has developed into skin cancer.
If there are indications of potential cancer, they will
proceed with a biopsy, which entails extracting a sample for additional
testing. For the biopsy, the area will be locally numbed, and a sample of the
area with be excised.
The sample will then be closely examined to conclude
whether the tissue is benign (healthy, non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous),
the specific type of squamous cell skin cancer, and/or if the cancer has any
other features that make further treatment necessary. Although SCC can spread
to other parts of the body, with early diagnosis and treatment, SCC is highly
curable.
Our cancer team has specialized training and
certification across skin cancer treatments, including surgical excision, Mohs
surgery, immunotherapy, targeted drug therapy, chemotherapy and radiation
therapy. As an affiliate of DOCS Dermatology Group, Metrolina Dermatology
providers also have access to cutting-edge clinical trials for cancers less
responsive to traditional treatment.
