An inflammatory skin condition triggered by direct contact with irritants or allergens, resulting in redness, itching and sometimes blisters or a rash.
Contact dermatitis is a skin condition that appears
when your skin comes into contact with specific substances that trigger
inflammation. Irritants can vary from laundry detergents, fragrances, and
soaps to plants like poison ivy or poison oak. Contact dermatitis can also
manifest from an allergic reaction.
The irritants can culminate in red, itchy, or painful
rashes on the body areas the irritants encountered. While uncomfortable—and
sometimes unbearable—contact dermatitis is not contagious and is not
life-threatening.
How is it treated?
Metrolina’s
board-certified dermatologists are experts at evaluating and treating skin
affected by contact dermatitis.
After conducting a patch test to identify the
cause of your skin’s adverse reaction, your provider will create a treatment
plan tailored to your needs. Common treatments for contact dermatitis include
