Skin Infections

A result of bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral infections that enter the body through a cut or wound on the skin.

What is it?

When the protective barrier of the skin is compromised, the body incurs an infection. The severity of the infection will vary based on the type of infection (bacterial, fungal, parasitic, viral), but it is important to monitor the results of the infection closely. The immediate area could be impacted (swelling, pus, redness) or the infection could cause systemic issues (fever, pneumonia, body aches).

Many skin infections are highly contagious, so if you notice any significant changes in size, shape, or severity of the infection, consult a physician immediately.

How is it treated?

The board-certified dermatologists at Metrolina Dermatology will evaluate the infection point, review your symptoms, and provide an appropriate treatment plan for your skin infection.

A skin culture may be taken to identify the infection, which can then be processed in our on-site pathology lab. Our Charlotte lab is fully accredited by the College of American Pathologists, ensuring it upholds the highest standards for quality and accuracy. The lab will analyze the sample, and your care team will follow-up promptly with next steps.
